"Mom.......Can I get out of first grade?"
At the end of each school year, we have been part of our homeschool group's Promotion Night. Families gather, and each father takes a turn to call up his children, bless them, and promote them to their next grade. We pray over our children, and each child has an opportunity to present something whether it be a piano piece, scripture they have memorized, or a science project they have built. This past year we were unable to make it to our group's event.
Even though he is doing second grade work, and has almost completed his
second grade math (should be done before Christmas) Kapena was
concerned. For some reason, he figured that since he wasn't 'officially' promoted, he must still be stuck in first grade. He wanted out. Officially.
So we planned our own 'Promotion Night.' We invited a couple of other families who had never done this. It was extra special to have Nana & Pop Pop visiting from Florida.
We kept it simple. We prayed over the kids. Dad's called each child up, bragged on them just a bit, and presented them with their certificate. Then we ate!
What a special time for the kiddos.
To have the family gather....
to have dad praise them and bless them....
to be encouraged once again in their efforts
as they strive ultimately to glorify the Lord!

Kawika is 5, and a government school would put him
in Kindergarten this year. In our homeschool, he is
one of my best students. It has been a blessing
to teach each child to read, but it sure was fun to teach Kawika!
He zoomed through our phonics program, and just took off!
He is enthusiastic about schoolwork, and keeps pace with his 4 older siblings, learning right along side them.
